UPDATES🌸✌️ by Lex Gjurasic

With day to day life changing so quickly I wanted to give you some updates about exhibition schedule changes that hopefully brighten your day and make my art more accessible to you.

I’m excited to let you know that MOCA Tucson has asked me to participate in their artist take-over on Instagram. Through the tiny screen on your phone you will be transported into my studio, 4/5-4/9, to witness the triumphs, joys and horrors of a working artist’s creative life while in quarantine. I promise it will be fun!
Go follow @mocatucson on IG and @lexgjurasic.

As with many other previously planned exhibitions in this time of global pandemic, my exhibition WEIRDOS had been forced to go from IRL to online. Even though it’s kinda disappointing you won’t get to see these sculptural pieces made from reclaimed materials all floating on the wall at Tiny Town like the massive trash island in the Pacific, we all have to adapt. With this change I invite you to join me online to enjoy the exhibition and hopefully buy a piece! All the works are under $100. And I will offer local only pick-up without human contact. Please do consider the powerful impact of supporting artists directly has right now. It’s a life saver.

More information, links to the online exhibition etc etc etc to follow in a future correspondence, and of course my email subscribers will get first dibs!

Thank you for your enduring love and support! Can’t wait to hug you (with consent) soon!

Just a handful of the 100 WEIRDOS to be displayed online.

THE GOLDEN PYRAMID INSTALLATION GLEAMS IN THE ARTIST SPOTLIGHT AT THE MSA ANNEX!

TUCSON, Arizona – It’s a BIRD! It’s a PLANE! It’s a Golden PyramidThe Golden Pyramid is art installation conceived in collaboration by artist Lex Gjurasic and the creative minds behind DIRT at the MSA Annex.  The temporary exhibition, as part of the Artist Spotlight, runs August 30- Sept 25  in the courtyard of the MSA Annex,  267 South Avenida del Covento with a special event reception during the Summer Night Market on Friday, August 30, 6-9pm.

Presented by the MSA Annex and sponsored by MOCA Tucson, The Golden Pyramid invites interaction with visitors through the social media hashtag,  #GoldenPyramidAnnex. The gleaming structure that will erupt from the earth is a dazzling and potent symbol that creates a global connection on a local level. For the duration of the installation the artists will hide golden nuggets around the MSA Annex that when found and returned to The Golden Pyramid and posted on social media using the hashtag #GoldenPyramidAnnex will be reward participants with 10% off their next purchase at DIRT.

Check out all the cool stuff at DIRT here!

The Golden Pyramid is an overlap of both Gjurasic’s artistic vision and the philosophy behind DIRT as it is a “mystical exploration that blends physical objects and spiritual services of will; honing the divine.”

Jaguars, Outer Space Dinosaurs and PBS by Lex Gjurasic

Hello friends,

If you follow me on social media you are already well aware of these updates but I wanted to share them with you directly. Over the past week I’ve been full force fundraising for a project near to my heart. I’ve spearheaded a online campaign on behalf of the Friends of Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge on the border near Sasabe, AZ. Currently at the education center at Brown Canyon there is a beautiful jaguar specimen in disrepair. Our goal is to refurbish this beauty and move it to be on display for the public to enjoy at the BANWR visitor center. For me personally, the jaguar, though growingly rare in southern Arizona is a powerful symbol of the need for free migration across the border. Jaguars must roam between Mexico and the US in order to sustain their dwindling population. By sharing the story of the Brown Canyon Jaguar we are able to draw attention the the plight of all the endangered species in the region and the tireelss work of the volunteers at BANWR.

PLEASE read the whole story of the Brown Canyon Jaguar here. LIKE! SHARE! DONATE! In just a week we have raised $780 of our $1850 goal. We are SO CLOSE.

For me this project is a true labor of love and every little bit helps.

BIG thanks to all those who have already given.

Also this week I’ve been working with a different form of wild life! KIDS.

MOCA Tucson invited me to help facitate their children’s installation art camp this summer and its been a blast. At the end of all 3, week long sessions you will have the oppertunity to see the final installations the campers created. Images below are just a sneak peak…

Come by on Friday 6/28 from 5-7pm!

And if you can’t come by you will have a chance to watch the magic unfold on TV! All week we had a crew from Arizona Public Media’s Arizona Illustrated observing the children’s “process.”

I’ll definitly let you know when it airs. SO exciting.

Modern Ziggurat, mixed media sculpture including quartz crystal points and pulverized minerals, 2018

Modern Ziggurat, mixed media sculpture including quartz crystal points and pulverized minerals, 2018

Name 3 specific artists that have influenced you and why.

Three artist that have inspired this work are as follows. Lynda Benglis excites me as an artist and thus inspires my own work. I admire how she moves seamlessly between mediums in unexpected ways. Specifically Benglis' more recent wall hanging paper sculptures which are embellished with glitter btoh  surprise and delight me while  still feeling familial. Painter  Sally Michel's color palette of her dynamic landscape paintings decribes a relationship with land I don't see represented by other artists as joyfully. Michel's ablity to drop into abstraction with ease without losing the land’s defining essence is tenacity I see reflected in  my own paintings and sculptures. Fearless Eva Hesse's use of unconventional and experimental materials in her sculptures are like a love letter to not just me as an artist but a woman while reminds me to stay true to my artistic vision even if it doesn’t always make sense.

Name of 3 specific artworks that have influenced you and why.

My sculpture Modern Ziggurat is directly inspired by Louise Bourgeois' sculpture Lair. While my sculpture mirrors Lair's shape and form Modern Ziggurat's colors make it queerer and therefore less solemn.  By embellishing Modern Ziggurat with crystal and pulverized minerals it allows the sculpture to be reflective of the essential elements found in the desert landscape. Modern Ziggurat may stand tall like a mountain but it is a dwelling, a place of spiritual presence. You can  also find the influence of Bourgeois'  more moundy, mammalian sculptures such as Cumul I in the cloud form in my installation. The monumental pieces of  folk art Salvation Mountain near Joshua Tree inspires my own work with it's  viberant, energetic and direct hand to the art feel of the creative process which cares little for perfection. I enjoy that Salvation Mountain is one with the landscape and not a separate entity that is so precious and delicate and must only be appreciated in the sealed, dust free, safe space of a gallery. Salvation Mountain is allowed to be free and alive! Werner Herzog's haunting documentary film Cave of Forgotten Dreams  explores the crystal coated caves of Chauvet, France in a way that is more art and less science. By experiencing the film we explore a realm of the internal as well as humanity's interaction with the earth over tens of thousands of years which then enlightens us to what it is to be a human in the modern age.

Name 3 non-visual art influences or experiences that have inspired you.

The act of rock hunting in the desert influences not just my studio work but my dreams at night. Seeking is my only repeatative dream I have. In my dreams I am constantly looking for and finding treasures. It is this conscious and unconscious act that I bring to the studio as part of my process. My experience in 2001 traveling on the  Zapatista carvan which traveled from Chiapas to Mexico City to advocate forthe rights of all indiginous people in Mexico has heavily influence my perspective as an artist as well as how I live as citizen of the world. The caravan experience gave me a depth of knowledge of what it means to be an artist whom lives and works in the borderland. My dear friend of over 20 years Jake Shears' self titled solo album which was inspired by living in New Orleans a city which I have roots in and a very emotional connection with as a Katrina survivor, has become the soundtrack in my studio over the past year. Throughout our  friendship I have been given insight into the process of the making of the album over the past year and it’s joy of life energy has infused into my work.

Wish List. If you could go behind the scenes of some of the local museums for this project- what would be your dream to find?

Without a doubt I would love to dive deep into the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, it's my personal Mecca. To play within The Girard collection of global cultural treasures that have be so lovingly amassed and diplayed in such a unique way would be beyond thrilling. I'd also love to commune with living artifacts of the Heard Museum in hopes of gaining greater insight into the ancestors of the land we now call Arizona.

Urchins at DIRT by Lex Gjurasic

Crystal studded sea urchins are now at DIRT in the Annex at the Mercado in Tucson.

Each magical urchin is cast in from an actual sea urchin thus retaining the unique natural form. The sculpture is then handpainted and studded with quartz crystal points and embellished with retro-reflective micro beads and glow n’ the dark paint. They glitter, they glow, they shine and they sparkle no matter the lighting.

The vibration is high on these guys!

$60 each.
